Tsingtao is pretty good for a clean, fizzy lager that goes down really easy.

see also Corona. i was surprised how crisp and clean that tasted.

I had some of that on tap on Saturday July 11 in an English pub in Yorkville in Toronto.

My wife really liked it. Even better than the 1/2 pint of Guinness she'd ordered.
So I think I ended up having 2*(3/4 pint). A little of the Guinness too, IIRC.

I thought it was passable in the English setting, but could see it probably deserves sort of a plonky reputation. Which is at least partly why I hadn't remarked on it until now.

Nothing, cause everything I have of my own supply has another 3-18months aging left.

Tsingtao is actually one of my favourite beers. Corona is OK, but again, only makes sense in certain contexts. It's also GBP1.30 per bottle here in bars if you buy a dozen.

The worst "beer" I've ever had is Blue Girl (apparently from Germany, but for some reason prevalent in HK): http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/874/19980 It has no redeeming features whatsoever, and tastes like water.

I fully support you drinking Asian beers.

However, I feel like there's not a lot of good reason in most parts of the world to drink imported pale lagers. Pale lagers are the wonder bread of beer, they're commodity beer. Wherever you are there's probably an acceptable macro-lager brewed somewhere near you.

I don't understand why we should buy beer that's brewed to be mild and clean tasting if it had to pass half the globe to get to us. It's a waste with no benefit.

Belgian beers might warrant that (I'm not talking about fucking Stella here) but I don't know of too many others that do. No big deal if you're in the US I suppose to drink Mexican or Canadian beers but you think about the time and effort and resources it took to bring a Peroni here and you end up paying a premium for the privilege of drinking a beer that was sub standard when it left the brewery and is probably light struck and oxidized by the time you get it. For what?

I can see your point, but Tsingtao is brewed just over the border, and Japan is only a 3-5 hour flight away, so it's not like they come from Europe or America.

I agree that it's better to usually try and drink local, which is generally what I do. Having said that, while we have 2 breweries in HK, we don't usually see their stuff on sale in the bars.

Anyway, this Friday I plan to go to a new bar that's opened in a club and partake in Kilkenny draught for non-cutthroat prices.

That's why I say I support you drinking Asian

I'm not totally opposed to importing as I mentioned the Belgians. Also if Guinness is your thing (my opinion on this beer is well established) there's not really anything equivalent to the nitro cans and most stouts brewed in the US are much heavier beers so I can see a reason for importing that. It's really just the white bread beers that I don't see a reason to import.

Fair enough then, I thought you were just saying in general there's no reason to drink Asian beer.

Agree about not importing most white-bread beers, for example Bud. Though I suspect that the Bud in HK is actually brewed somewhere in Asia.

Most Guinness served in Asia is also brewed here, and I think only 1-2 local Irish pubs serve Guinness from Ireland, the problem being that it doesn't travel or keep very well. Not that you care.

Based on a limited sample size (2), that probability is 100%. Or the beer just really sucks--I'm not convinced the Italians understand beer.

Went to pick up some beers last night and they already had the Summit Autum Sampler. Too soon!

That, the beginning of NFL training camp and the State Fair are always the signs that summer is ending.

So, Went and bought a bottle of Oliver Camelot mead (8.50 at meijers, 6.50 on sale this week)

It's okay, little bland for a mead, definately not aged long enough for a proper traditional mead, as it tastes like my home made traditional mead, and I don't plan on touching it for atleast a year.

Anyway, I had 2 Oberon's laying around, and thought, why the hell not.

So poured a glass of mead into my beer mug, and poured the 2 Oberons into it as well, wala a Braggot, in it's traditional form.

Can't decide between JW Dundee Honey Brown, Bar Fly IPA, Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA or Yuengling. Decisions...decisions.

The 90 minute is really good. The Yuengling was good too. On the Barfly IPA now.

I had a work outing today on the St. Croix river which is the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Since I was already there I hopped the border to buy some beer at a WI liquor store to get some stuff we can't get here.

I got some Arrogant Bastard and Smoked Porter from Stone, some Pilsner from Oskar Blues, and some Dancing Man and Belgian Red from New Glarus.

If you can get Dark Horse you ought to be able to get Bell's Two Hearted Ale which is kind of a benchmark for American IPAs.

Also you should look out for the various Sierra Nevada seasonals.

The Celebration Ale and the Harvest Ales are all good for an AIPA lover.

i did ask them about the other SN beers and they said they have had lots of trouble getting anything other than the Pale Ale since just before last xmas.

still, i'll be in Cali for the better part of a week next month, so i aim to try whatever i can find then.

Oh, there will be more to try than you can handle.

I would prioritize getting some Stone
http://www.stonebrew.com/

Look at Beer Advocate's Beer Fly for places you'll be to find out what else is good.
