Apparently not, but it's been indicated it'll be there before the year is out.
I looked at the Captivate today. Seems like a solid fallback, but I'm going to pin all my hopes on the Streak using that software above. I'll be ordering it sight unseen, so hopefully I'm not making HUGE MISTAKE. At least, in any case, it won't be my own money I'm making the huge mistake with...

$299 on contract, $549 off
Currently they're showing 2.1 and saying it will have 2.2...but not when it will actually come out. Maybe they're just racing to get 2.2 on there and will ship as soon as it is? http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/27/d...-without-dell/ http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/27/d...still-planning |

October! I think Dell has handled the launch of this thing extremely badly, particularly in the US. Coupled with outrageous, monopolistic accessory pricing and piss poor customer service I'm struggling to recommend the device as a package. It's a fantastic bit of kit but I hope it never breaks because I have no faith at all in Dell as a company anymore.
I arrived in Washington last night so it'll be interesting to see people's reactions to it on this aide of the pond ![]() |

Nothing draws the cougars like a phone big enough for them to read.

Played briefly with Mr. Wonder's Streak... very nice device. I like the size of it... I think it'd be too big for me as a phone, unfortunately. Probably a tad too small as a tablet computer for me... I liked it's handle and build quality... I didn't really get to play with any apps since data was turned off for obvious reasons.

Well, in a par-for-the-course moment, Dell fucked me on the presale. I actually registered two names/emails (mine and another) at our company when the presale first appeared. Got no email, no code. Spoke with sales support, they say they sent 35,000 emails at 6am this morning to people about the presale. Neither of our people were on that list, no presale action. Ship dates on public sale will be "weeks to months" in the future. I want to be angry, but after this summer with Dell I may not care. One irritation after another with them - the last one happened on Tuesday, when a tech came out for a "Complete Care" service call to replace a motherboard on a laptop. He fried the new motherboard, then fried the memory reinstalling the original motherboard, then broke the retaining tabs on the main bottom plastic cover. Laptop is now on it's way to "the depot" for serious repair. I've had several years of good service with Dell (after several years of BAD service), but this summer they have delayed order after order, lost orders, mis-shipped orders, blown up a laptop, failed to send presale emails, and ignored contacts to tech support and order support. It's a wonder I still even want to carry a damned Dell phone. grr.

So the much anticipated 2.1 update arrived saturday morning. What a fucking mess! Some people have had horrific problems updating. Not the least of which is that the Dell PC suite won't recognise the phone after the update so you can't restore a backup of contacts, sms messages, game saves, etc. All of which are wiped when you upgrade. Not a good start is it? None of the old dell widgets work anymore and the icons have been made bigger for some reason. It's so bad that O2 has pulled the upgrade and Dell are supposedly releasing one at the end of the week.
Mine has developed a habbit of randomly illuminating the three buttons but other than that it's okay. Apart from my lovely full keyboard which has been replaced with one that has larger keys, yet is still somehow less responsive. I make much more errors now and they're dfficult to correct as there are no arrow keys anymore. This needs sorting asap. I elected to forgo the awful new homescreen setup from dell and installed ADW.Launcher plus a few cool looking apps. Very happy with how it turned out, though I did have to try a lot of different apps to get what I wanted. Thank god for Android's 24 hour refund policy. |

Eh, I haven't had good luck with Dell as far as software and some bits of hardware (good experiences with their monitors though), just sucks that it seems like the Streak release/updating process has been... not great.
They had an opportunity to really make waves, imo.

This is why I'm so annoyed. They have an amazing piece of hardware here that could truly be the "one device" that people are always looking for but they keep dropping the ball. First the complete lack of fanfare for the uk launch, then the many botched us launches, the stupidly high accessory prices, now the update. I'm still pretty impressed with the thing all in all, but it's getting harder and harder to recommend it.
The 2.1 update has solved a few problems though. You can now scroll a webpage during typing, which is handy for forum posts, such as this. More importantly the snes emulator now works. Android 1.6 didn't support third party multi touch. It's actually better than the psp emulator I used to use in that everything runs perfectly. On screen controls are a bit hit and miss though. Apparenty you can hook it up to a Wiimote and use that as an input device - pretty cool! |
