It's time, I think, to go back to a hosted solution. The DSL solution is truly terrible, and until I can get sickpantsparty down and up bandwidth that's reliably "always on," the home hosting solution needs to go. On top of that, keeping up with the hardware upgrades isn't really cheap, or easy, most especially from a time standpoint.
I've been glancing around at what's out there, and I keep seeing stuff like GoDaddy's unlimited space/bandwidth plan for $15ish a month. Does anyone have any experience with this plan or others like it? Are there places that you guys would recommend looking? I'm not interested in "super cheap" here, since I've gone that route twice before and both times it's punched us in the mouth in the support realm, the last time essentially putting us out of business for a year. Sure, a good portion of that was my general neglect to fix it (no thanks to Carlo's perfectly acceptable replacement for this place) but something has to be done. Now. Thoughts? |

I don't have practical experience with that plan. My site hosted by GoDaddy is pretty small. I have had good experience with their customer service on the administrative side (they wouldn't process my credit card from an Iraqi IP) but have never had to call because of a problem with the server.
They're business practices are as close to shady as you can get without being obvious. They have tons of frivolous addons that you have to sift through no matter what you're visiting the site for. I'm sure someone with little knowledge of what it takes to own a website would be caught up in some of it. I just deselect everything and move on. I FTP everything so I never have to log into their slow, cumbersome and poorly laid out browser based interface.

This forum that I read uses GoDaddy and it's been fine. They are on the $100/mo plan, though, which is, uh, a little more than $15. Remote access, rebootable server, etc.
(As far as I know, that is...I'm a user there, not an admin) trhoppe is the guy you want to talk to over there, if you want first-hand info.

Have you checked The Admin Zone forums? They have a lot of reliable information there, not only about web hosting, but all aspects of forum administration...

I have had great experiences with GoDaddy, on a smaller scale than this, obviously.
If needed, I'd be willing to setup a payment plan as well. Oh... And fuck Drew in the face.

The last few times I went to our co-location site it was more than half empty. I'm wondering if maybe you could find a good deal for a partial cabinet at a colo?

That's not a bad idea. A buddy of mine still has some connections at a co-lo out here.
And for reference: it's not about the money (though saving some would be nice) it's about the lack of time to keep on top of hardware and software updates as well as being tired of pretending this QWEST connection is adequate. |

Of course it does nothing for the upgrade issues. I'm surprised that you've had hardware upgrade issues other than the DSL hardware. I'd think that it wouldn't take a ton of hardware power to run this site. Software is a completely different issue though. It's generally best to keep up on security patches which I'll admit is a PITA. I'm doing it with clustered servers. I'm managing 11 servers in all and we need to maintain Payment Card Industry compliance to keep our b2b customers happy. Shared hosting gives you most of the advantages of the co-lo except they deal with the hardware and some of the software but you don't really have your own server most of the time unless you pay through the nose.

Speaking of Carlo's site... when are you going to implement "the game" here?
