Yet another of the classic 24 hours after the Nurburgring and Le Mans. Just the GTs again, and this year the classes have been shifted. GT1 no longer participates, as they're having their two 1-hour World Championship races this same weekend at Spa, so GT2 is now the top class and with the delay of the FIA GT2 European Championship, this is now the sole round of the FIA GT2 European Cup for this year.
It's a small class unfortunately as the only competitors are in Ferraris and Porsches. BMW is there, but the FIA have not homologated the car for GT2 so they're running in the mixed class of national level GT cars that don't fit any other category, known as GTN. But they should still be able to compete for overall victory, they finished 6th back in 2004 when they had to run in the special category for the old M3 GTR V8. The largest class is GT3, and the largest contingent is that of Audi with 7 entered from various teams. There's also Alpinas, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, and Fords. The near-stock GT4 class is also participating this year, although there are only 4 participants. One of the drivers though is the winner of that GT5 Time Trial race-off they had. The race is this weekend, it will be broadcast on the series website (www.gt2europe.com) on and off for about 10.5 hours. American representation will be there in the form of Micharl Waltrip and MWR co-owner Robert Kauffman driving a GT2 Ferrari, as well as the two GT3 enties by American team United Autosports. Entry List: GT2 1 - AF Corse/ALD Team Vitaphone - Ferrari F430 GTE - Waltrip/Kauffman/Cadei/Cioci 2 - AF Corse/ALD Team Vitaphone - Ferrari F430 GTE - van de Poele/Longin/Bruni/Vilander 7 - Trackspeed - Porsche 997 GT3-RSR - T. I'd love a little more variety but I have to say I am more excited for this than I am an F1 race at Spa. Just something about tin top cars running there.

What happened to this big factory Nissan effort with the GTR. Nissan has so dropped the ball with this car and racing. They stopped their support of club racers and off road racing to build this team as well as a couple of "B" teams. Their main goals were to win Spa and Nurburgring and win the World Challenge championship with the B team.

I still think It's a bit of a failure, if only cause it Conforms to SRO rules and not ACO rules, and I seriously dislike the Sprint format of GT1 WC

Nissan wouldn't be able to run at the Nurburgring either with a GT1 car, so I'm not sure what you mean.

Im not sure where Apex got the impression Nissan was planning to run these races.
Granted, Spa this year was originally on the GT1 schedule, but they decided to abandon it for all sprints.

First practice is underway and already its the GT3-class Phoenix Audis that are leading the field. Three GT3 cars are ahead of the fastest GT2.

GT3 wont have the reliability though. Just see Audi's performances at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring the past couple years. The GT3 cars are mostly made for sprints, the GT2 cars have plenty of endurance history.

Qualifying is done and the top three are the #2 Ferrari from GT2, the #79 BMW from GTN, and the #50 Audi from GT3, all of which are separated by .4 seconds, so all three classes have a chance at this one.

15 hours in, the lead has been swapped mostly between the #2 Ferrari, #79 BMW, and #50 Audi. Unfortunately the Ferrari and Audi collected each other in an accident with a GT4 car and both are out of the race.
#79 BMW leads ahead of the #23 BMS Porsche and #16 IMSA Porsche, all on the same lap. Timing & Scoring: http://static.sportresult.com/federa...ml?class=TOTAL

Ouch. 79 BMW had a lead of over a lap from the two Porsches and the front suspension failed with only 40 minutes in the left.
#23 BMS Porsche takes the lead, one lap ahead of the #16 IMSA Porsche, and another lap ahead of the #79 BMW. United Autosports had gotten into the lead in GT3 but had power steering failure at Eau Rouge and have fallen back to third, #53 Muhlner Porsche now leads that class.

Well at least BMW got the Nurburgring 24 this year.
Impressive to see Michael Waltrip on the GT2 podium, 5th overall. Not really in contention but they kept their nose clean.

Debris was the only description I heard. They did finally have to replace it, it was coming off at the roofline.

They ran with it for a long while, through the night rain. One of the drivers was saying that water was seeping in.
I saw them working on it in the pits when they were in for something else. Maybe an errant harmer came flying from the Ford GT pit while they were trying to get the Ford launched. ![]()

Probably, WRT has been running that scheme in French GT and Belcar all year.
