Just found this lurking about. The first ever McLaren F1 road test.
http://rs469.rapidshare.com/files/26...C_LAREN_F1.pdf Some of the figures are still mesmerising. Of note is the 130-140 time of 0.8s. Must have been a power spike in 4th. |

It's definitely my lottery car. I'll keep the old Benz as my DD.

But the things is, if you can buy an F1, you probably could go ahead and buy both, since it's highly unlikely that you will spend more than 50% of your net worth on it...
Okay maybe some of us would.

I sat in an M6 not to long ago, and was very un-impressed when the Shifter shaf twisted in my hand (not the knob, but the shaft that went from the knob to the transmission.
If I am paying that fucking much for a car it better be solid. Especially when a 2001 Honda shifter feels more rigid.

In a 'real world' scenario I'd rather just buy the Z4 M Coupe for half the price, sink $20K into restoring the M6 I actually own, and then put the rest into the house or savings.
... If you want to denounce an entire production run of vehicles because of one defect in a car you sat in one time I'd really rather you not have it anyway, as you clearly have a bias whether the car was perfect or not. I'm the same way. In my mind an S2000 is, yeah, just a Honda. From the company that couldn't even do well by the NSX. |

I am denoucing them because of the fact you spend 102k on a car, that my Colorado's shifter felt 10x better(at a fifth the price, and built by Japan), then well that is rather pathetic IMO. And honestly I would treat any 100k USD {insert car here} the same way, the car better be fucking SOLID, from the door latches to the shifter, to the damned visor and Vanity mirror cover (if applicable). Hell I get upset if the ignition switch doesn't feel right.
I guess that I expected more out of the current BMW than what should have been expected, as apparently they are in such a technological orgy with the gadgets they can throw on a car to sell, that they forgot what got them there. And don't worry Nate, if you hadn't figured it out, I wouldn't ruin your dream of me getting one ![]() I don't know if I made any points or just rambled on, but alas I am done. ![]()

Thats probably our disconnect. I don't expect anything out of contemporary BMW.

The M5 is cheaper and roomier (despite being somehow shorter in length). The 911 Carrera S costs the same in a very well equipped state, less if you don't go crazy with the overpriced options, unless said military discount is very impressive. Because of that, I see no reason to go with an M6 unless you're so fat you can't fit in a 911. |

The military discount gets me the M6 for $90K. It isn't that good.
I only know because I was looking at the 135i which I can get for $31K. Still not good enough, imo. fwiw, on paper the M6 isn't a great car. But once I actually looked over one in preson it just has a presence that I admire. The used ones are falling into the $70K range in BMWCCA listings but I'll still not bother. BMWCCA listings are usually inflated for what I assume is to offset sellers remorse and the fact that the cars are typically better cared for.
No idea what they go for elsewhere. |
