Oh righty, a few of you might remember I bought a 2005 Mustang, V6, Screaming Yellow, with an automatic transmission about 5 years ago. I posted a thread about whether or not to get a G-Tech Pro, because I planned on doing some mods. I never got the G-Tech, but more on that later. I did get what was suppossed to be the most powerful axle-back exhaust, an MRT. Also, I got a K&N drop-in filter, nothimg spectacular. I took it to the local drag strip, Kilkare, back in the spring of '06. This is a partial quote of what I posted at the MustangForums.com back then, with my results from the timeslip and horrific spelling errors intact:
Today was beautiful in Dayton, clear sky and mid 60s. I knew this morning that after work I would head up there to Kil-Kare. I felt rather intimidated when I got there The place had a ton of cars lined up to race, includingfull blown dragsters. As I was sitting there in line, sorrounded by cars that all looked way faster than my meager stock V6 auto, I thought maybe I'd be called out by a track official who would say, "Hey! What are you doing? You don't belong here with these other cars. Get the hell out of here!" It never happened, but I was still nervous. I ended up lined up next to a Chevy Malibu 350, probably early 70s vintage, but I'm no musclecar expert. He car was louder than mine. The dude driving it was wearing a helmut and he looked serious, so I figured his car would kill mine, so don't worry about him, just don't make any bad mistakes, and don't blow the light. It was my turn, I was in the left lane. I put my left foot on the brake, my right on the gas and gave it a little. When the ligts changed and I was sure it was okay for me to go, I released the brake, and applied the throttle. The Malibu got a slight jump on me, I excpected him to just buld on that lead and crush me. about half way through, I started pulled at least even, then surge ahead for a convincing when in my debut. Well, maybe it wasn't a wi, maybe he was just testing his car and didn't go balls out, and wasn't really racing me. But his car sounded like he was on the gas the whole way, so I'll take it. Oh yeah, I think I let off the gas slightly early, I wasn't sure where the finishline was. Here is what my timeslip says, me first then the malibu next to it: re: 1.4559 / 1.2670 60: 2.3281 / 2.2569 330ft: 6.5589 / 6.5280 1/8 ET: 10.0010 / 10.0780 1/8mph: 71.98 / 66.28 1/4 ET: 15.4412 / 16.0759 1/4 mph: 90.14mph / 84.43 to be continued................ |

My times were on the left. I always hit 90 mph it seemed, and couldn't get better than a 15.4. So fast foward to 2010. My '05 makes 210 hp and 240 tq according to Ford. I took it to a dyno in 2006, it got 168 at the rear wheels before mods. Never got it dynoed again. This year I was debating on if I should get a G-Tech Pro or not, but after doing reasearch, I found out that the Dynolicious App for the iphone/ipod touch might be better, so I bought an ipod touch. I figure it is more versatile than a G-Tech Pro. I made some runs very early Saturday morning,. My first was on I-675. I launched slowly and got a 7.6 0-60 and a 15.8 1/4 mile @ 90 mph/
For my second launch, I went at 1,800 rpm, got a better result. I was also on a country road off the highway. . . to be continued.................Last edited by lostnight; 05-01-2010 at 10:57 PM.. |

Ok, I was falling asleep at the keyboard, so I went to bed. Here is a pic of the current Mustang parked in front of the house.
![]() The Dynolicious requires you to put in your car's weight, including driver. I did some math and research, and guessed 3,580. Later that morning, I drove to a county waste disposal station, they said my car weighed 3,600, so I was reasonably close there. There is also an input for estimated drivetrain loss. The default setting is 20%, so I left it there. I wonder if it should be a little bit higher with an automatic transmission. But 168 is 80% of 210, so that seems to fit. The Dynolicious gave me an extra 20 horsepoer at 188. I don't think the exhaust and K&N drop in would give me 20 more horsepower, but now that I am using the Dynolicious, I'll use those figures to be more consistent. Thursday is Test & Tune night at the local dragstrip (Kilkare), so I plan to take my Mustang there this week for some final runs. I'll also use the Dynolicious when I'm there o see how close the result are. I think my best launches were around 2,200 rpm when I was there 4 years ago, so I'll try that, maybe it will lower my 0-60 time also. I'm trading this car in for a 2011 Mustang, also a V6 and an automatic. But the 2011s have a new 3.7 V6 making 305 hp and 280 torque. I have one on order. I checked with the dealer yesterday, my car has been assigned a VIN #, and the build date is set for May 17th. I'll likely get the car 13 weeks after that. I plan to have fun with the new car also, so it will make an appearaance at Kilkare, and I'll use the Dynolicious with it of course. I'll post everything in this thread. Don't know what mods I'll make, because there really aren't any available at this time, the car is too new. |

Ford claims 210 at the crank and you're only getting 168 at the wheels? Really?
I didn't realize it's possible to lose upwards of 20% of your power between them. That doesn't seem right to me, but I'm no mechanic. ![]() |

Yeah, me either. I don't have the knowledge to argue either side of that one. But when I've read tests of cars that were dynoed, there does usually seem to be somewhere around a 20% loss, not just on the Mustang, but other cars as well.

Nce work, I'll have to get that app and try it out with the MINI.
I'd expect your new 'Stang to cut a solid second off your 1/4 mile time.

Thanks, that's what I'm guessing, I don't expect the auto to dip into the 13s lke the manual, at least not bone stock. Have fun testing the Mini. I just put my i-pod in the cup holer in the center console, and used a sock to help keep it from moving. Some cupholders might not provide the stability for an accurate run, but mine held the i-pod nice and stable.

The autos should be faster than the manuals, in all honesty. I'm guessing you'll still get a least 13.9's on your best runs.

My 1997 Miata, rated at 133hp from the factory but now equipped with an intake, cat-back exhaust, and lightweight flywheel, made 115hp on a dyno. My 2008 Mazdaspeed3, rated at a stock 263hp, made 248hp on a dyno. The Miata's drivetrain loss may seem high to you, but it's likely that Mazda underrated the Mazdaspeed3 so that they didn't have to market a cheaper car with the same horsepower as the 274hp Mazdaspeed6. Another stock Mazdaspeed3 that got dynoed that day put down 233hp, which is almost exactly 85% of 274. I figure I got a Wednesday car. Quote:

I admit, I'm just going to pretty much copy and paste what I posted on the Mustang Collective Forums, but it was a fun evening:
I did go to Test and Tune tonight, and made 5 runs. The first run I was a complete dumbass, put the car in 3 instaead of D, got a 16.7 @ 89 mph, doh, totally embarrassed, I was in the second set of cars to run for the day, so I'm sure most of the people there were watching. My Dynolicious times on that were very close to my timeslip, but I would rather not post sucky times like that. I just wanted a decent time where Dynolicious and the timeslip were on the same page. My nxt 3 runs, I got decent times, Run 2 - 15.421 @ 90.82 mph, 15.473 @ 89.93 mph, and 15.526 @ 90.10 mph. But thise middle 3 runs didn't have good ynolicious runs that matched up, they were way off, something was wrong. I had the iPod in my cupholder for the first 3 runs. The 1st one seemed to be in sinc, but it was a marred run. I think I hit the button on the Dynolicious too soon for my next 3 runs. There starts off with a red button (all touch screen) that reads "Test Start" You touch that, the it turns into a light green button that reads "Wait" for a very brief time, then it turns into a solid green button that reads "Go!" with a tone when you're suppossed to launch. I had the iPod in my cupholder for the first 3 races. Then for the fourth I mounted it to the windsheild with suction cup in my GPS holder. That got even more wacky Dynolicios results, too much vibration I think. So on my fifth and final run, I put the iPod back in the cupholder. I ignored the car next to me, and the people in the stands that probably thought I had incredibly bad reaction times. I set the rpm to the middle 1000s, not exactly sure, while my left foot was on the brake. Then I waited for the tree to go green. The other car took off. I stayed behind and pushed to button on my iPod. Dynolicious gave me the cue to go, so I took off. Success, a decent 1/4 mile time, and the Dynolicious had very similar numbers. It took a while to get everything working right, butluckily their weren't a ton of cars that early and I could quickly get 5 runs in. I'll post pics if some timeslips and Dynolicious screenshots soon. Oh yeah, there was a girl there running with a 2010 Camaro RS, it must have been her first time, she got pulled out of line for not having had her car inspected, no wristband or windshieild grafiti. But she got that done and made a run, I recorded it on video, I'll post that later. I think the audio might be kind of funny if it all comes through. |

Ok, the next 3 pics will be Dynolicious results of the 5th run, and the 4th pic will show the actual timeslip of the 5th run.

So the Dynolicious isn't perfect, he mph was off by 2 on the 1/4 mile trap speed, but it was just about right on for the 1.8 mile speed. It seems pretty reasonable, especially if you already have an iPhone or iPod.
Here is my quickest run of the night, not much quicker than my 5th. . ![]() , Now I'll get to work uploading that 2010 Camaro V6 1/4 mile run I mentioned, I'll post it here. |

And here is the 2010 Camaro V6 run I watched after I finished my 5 runs.
![]() Try not to spoil.... . . . . . . She ran it at 15.53@90.49 mph. So for one evening, at least until I left, the 2005 Mustang V6 4.0 automatic > the 2010 304 hp V6 Camaro. I know, give her a few runs and my times will be toast, but I'll take it, lol! I couldn't stick around though, I was missing trivia night at the neighborhood bar. My team lost the first round without me. But we came back and took the overall by 4 points. Free drinks for us! It was a very good day! |

Good writeup on the Dynolicious app, Randy!
Old Yeller was a steadfast steed. No shame there... but it's time to make room for the young blood. ![]()

Thanks, I had a lot of fun with Old Yeller, I'll miss that car. But yeah, I'm looking forward to getting the new one. One of my friends told me last night that I shouldn't take the new one out to the drag strip, or have fun with it like I did the old one. I said,"Then what's the point? I'm getting it to have fun with." Of course, it will also be my year round DD, so I'm not going to go too nuts with it. The occasional dragstrip run with my '05 didn't seem to bother it any.

On my way home from work Friday, I managed to knock my 0-60 time down to 7.1. It seemed like it has a sub-seven second run in it. So I took it out for a ride this morning and got a 6.9, finally!
![]() I drove to Hidy Ford and Interstate Ford after that, still no 2011 Mustangs at either place. I got home, got on the computer, punched in my VIN like I do almost every day, and my window sticker finally appeared. So maybe in the next 2-3 weeks I might have my new ride. Better take it easy on my '05 now. Last edited by lostnight; 05-17-2010 at 04:31 PM.. |

Yeah, I'm really going to miss the '05, it's been a great car for me, had a lot of fun with it. The window sticker on the new one indicates a build date of May 20th, tomorrow. But Ford seems pretty backed up when it comes to shipping out the cars, so it might be a while. When it gets here, it gets here, I'm in no hurry. I don't want to pester the Ford dealer about when my car is supposed to get here, don't want to seem overly anxious before negotiations begin.

I got the call at work today, my 2011 came in. But I had to work and they closed at 6:00, so no time to do the paperwork and negotiations. I did get there in tim to check it out and take a couple of pics.
![]() . ![]() Shane my salesguy came out and talked to me while I was taking pics. He said it was ok to drive it home until the Sunday purchase day. So I got the rest of my stuff out of the '05, and took it home. I decided on an area for a testdrive, took the highway to try to get there. Unfortunately, there was an 1 car wreck on this stretch of highway, which I thought was usually low on traffic. This happened right before my exit. The highway was shut down totally. I sat there for at least 45 minutes. Good time to program the stereo. It just rained, so the grassy median was wet and muddy. There was nowhere to go, so I saw a few 4wd trucks and SUVs do uturns. Then the rwd Ford Astro van in front of me tried it, I yelled, "Noooo nooo, bad idea!" Of course he got stuck, was still stuck there a half hour later by the time I got to the paved turnaround place. The rest of the commute wasn't much easier, traffic and construction eveywhere, people getting tickets, bad driving night. I did get to punch it a few times, felt strong, but no more tham I expected. And I did turn off TC, first thing I did. So I finally got it home and called it a night. ![]() Last edited by lostnight; 06-04-2010 at 09:50 PM.. |

Took it to Kil-Kare dragstrip for the first time yesterday. At the last moment before my 2nd run I decided to jam my camera into the windsheild mount for my gps/iPod. I couldn't get it twisted around all the way, so the camera angle is funny. The car next to me was a Charger R/T. Only got 2 runs in, they were crowded.
